Anatomia patologica del carcinoma del
polmone - immagini
Lung, adenocarcinoma
Note the gland-like structures lined by epithelial cells
showing some nuclear atypia, e.g., angulation and
variation in size.

Lung,small cell carcinoma
The top 1/3 of this specimen contains the small cell
undifferentiated carcinoma seen as small tightly packed cells. There is
early invasion. The cells may closely resemble lymphocytes in appearance
or be spindle or polygonal in shape. This tumor is often centrally (hilar)
located and shows a high correlation with cigarette smoking.

Lung, large cell
undifferentiated carcinoma
Large cell carcinoma of the lung is a form of
bronchogenic carcinoma arising from the bronchial epithelium.
Histologically this cancer appears as aggregations of undifferentiated
cells, as seen in this section. These cells are large compared with the
cells seen in small cell carcinoma.

Bronchial washing, large cell
undifferentiated carcinoma
The cell in the center of the screen shows malignant
criteria in the form of: a high N/C; hyperchromasia; clearing and clumping
of chromatin; angular chromatin and nucleolus; irregular thickness of and
angulation of the nuclear border.

Lung,squamous cell carcinoma
This tumor has cells which are poorly differentiated.
Note the many layers of flattened, eosinophilic cells that occupy 80% or
more of this specimen. The marked eosinophilia of the cells is due to the
presence of large amounts of cytoplasmic keratin . This is a
characteristic specimen of squamous cell carcinoma. This type of cancer
typically arises in the central (hilar) portion of the lung and has the
closest correlation with smoking of any of the bronchogenic cancers.

Lung, bronchioloalveolar cell
carcinoma (airway cast)
This gross specimen is a cast of a portion of the airway
of the lung. Bronchioalveolar carcinoma does not form a discrete mass.
Rather this cancer travels along the airway replacing the respiratory
epithelium with a tall, columnar, mucin producing cell type that forms
papillary projections into the lumen of the airway.
